Case Study: Science and Technology Campus “E. Mattei”

The Science and Technology Campus “Enrico Mattei,” a branch of the Università di Urbino and the former SOGESTA [1], was chosen for the first edition of R.E.S.E.T. in 2013. This building complex, which is located among the hills near the historical center of Urbino, was designed in the seventies by Foscari to serve as a training center for ENI’s executives. It soon served its purpose and was converted into a research center for alternative energy sources during the oil crisis. In 1994, it was purchased by the Università di Urbino and then converted into a science and technology university center. This nearly 130,000 sq. feet complex provides all the required facilities for its management and for its guests (group study rooms, offices, laboratories, cafeteria, residence halls for accommodation, sports facilities, and a heliport)[2].

[1] The SOGESTA acronym stands for “SOcietà di GEstione di Sistemi Tecnologici Avanzati” (an ENI management center for advanced technological systems).
[2] There are some similarities between the Campus “E. Mattei” and other twentieth-century cases of big companies that decided to design and build production centers with supplementary facilities or holiday settlements for their employees (see the Olivetti building complex in Ivrea, designed by Gabetti and Isola, or the ENI sea holiday settlement in Cesenatico by Giuseppe Vaccaro).
